As you can see from the graphic, (supplied courtesy of Gulf News), there are six towers that will hover above 100 floors, Burj Dubai (130 Floors), Marina 101 (101 floors), Al Burj (180 floors?), Burj Al Alam (108 floors), Princess Tower (107 floors) and Pentominium (120 storeys) will complete the six.

BUT, Dubai is not all about the biggest and the largest. Dubai is becoming iconic as you can see from the recent announcement of the Oval, which only boasts 19 floors, however, it is set to become just as iconic as Dubai’s big booming towers!

The Ren Building

This is the Ren Building, proposed to be built for the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai. I'm not sure if they have actually started building it. My guess is they have, and it's probably in the Pudong district where it will beat other iconic buildings such as the Jin Mao (where Grnd Hyatt is) and the Pearl Tower buildings. I'm told the skyline of Pudong changes every month or so with the completion of yet another futuristic building.

'Ren' means people in Chinese and the shape of the building is the Chinese character for people. I'm sure one day they can even build a building in the shape of the Chinese character for love, or any character they want. Structural engineers will have to stretch their innovative and creative limits to keep up with the architects.

I was in Beijing 7 years ago and that's a city I want to visit again. The historic palaces and structures are simply awesome, and made me so proud of my Chinese roots. Now there's even more reason to visit Beijing, with several iconic buildings up for the Olympics. The most famous building is of course the 2008 Olympics Stadium, better known as the Bird's Nest. I'm told by an architect that despite the experts contributing to the fantastic design and structure, the building has a major 'flaw'. With all the twists and turns, it would be a huge challenge for TV crews to film the activities in the stadium because when the sun is overhead, there are shadows everywhere in the stadium. I suppose one way to overcome it is to not hold any event around mid day. Whatever the problems, I think most of us will be awed by the buildings in Beijing come 8.8.2008. I'm already counting down: 27 days to go!

This ancient amphitheatre is one of the most important monuments in Lyon and every tourist wants to visit this place. Believed to be built around 19 AD under King Tiberius, an inscription found in 1958 is can be seen in the Gallo-Roman Museum. The amphitheatre was meant for entertainment, special sports activity such as Gladiator fights, federal activities and many other social purposes. It was originally built for staging and tragic fights and plays and it had a capacity of approx 11,500 people. This amphitheatre was also used for early martyrs as sacrificial site.

Fort Saint-Jean (Rue de la Poudrière)

It is an old and beautiful fort built in 1660 by Louis XIV in Marseille. This fort was used as a prison during the French Revolution. This fort guards the entrance of the port and we can see another fort on the other side as well. This fortification was done mainly to protect the old town. The museum projects itself over Boa Viagem (“Bon Voyage,” “Good Journey”), the 817-square meter reflecting pool that surrounds the cylindrical base “like a flower,” in the words of Niemeyer.

A wide access slope leads to a Hall of Expositions, which has a capacity for sixty people. Two doors lead to the viewing gallery, through which can be seen the Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro, and Sugarloaf Mountain. The saucer-shaped modernist structure, which has been likened to a UFO, is set on a cliffside, at the bottom of which is a beach. In the film Oscar Niemeyer, an architect committed to his century (Marc Henri Wajnberg, 2000), Niemeyer is seen flying over Rio de Janeiro in a UFO, which then lands on the site, suggesting this as the origin of the museum.

WonderWorks began as a Top Secret facility on a remote island, in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle. Expo 67 was nicknamed "Man and his World", taken from Antoine de Saint Exupéry's memoir Terre des hommes, (literally "Land of Men"), translated as Wind, Sand and Stars. Housing was one of the main themes of Expo 67. Habitat 67 then became a thematic pavilion visited by thousands of visitors who came from around the world. During Expo 67 it was also the temporary residence of the many dignitaries coming to Montreal.

It was designed to integrate the variety and diversity of scattered private homes with the economics and density of a modern apartment building. Modular, interlocking concrete forms define the space. The project was designed to create affordable housing with close but private quarters, each equipped with a garden. The building was believed to illustrate the new lifestyle people would live in increasingly crowded cities around the world.

The complex was originally meant to be vastly larger. Ironically, the building's units are now quite expensive rather than "affordable" due to its architectural cachet. It is owned by its tenants who formed a limited partnership that purchased the building from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation in 1985.

HSB Turning Torso is a skyscraper in Malmö, Sweden, located on the Swedish side of the Öresund strait. It was designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and officially opened on 27 August 2005. The tower reaches a height of 190 metres (623 feet) with 54 stories. Upon completion, it was the tallest building in Scandinavia, the tallest residential building in the EU and the second tallest residential building in Europe, after the 264-metre (870 ft)-high Triumph-Palace in Moscow. A similar, taller skyscraper featuring the 90° twist is the Infinity Tower, currently under construction in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The 86-metre (280 ft)-high Kronprinsen was the tallest building in Malmö before Turning Torso.

The design is based on a sculpture by Calatrava called Twisting Torso. It uses nine segments of five-story pentagons that twist as it rises; the topmost segment is twisted ninety degrees clockwise with respect to the ground floor. Each floor consists of an irregular pentagonal shape rotating around the vertical core, which is supported by an exterior steel framework. The two bottom segments are intended as office space. Segments three to nine house 147 luxury apartments.

The Twisting Torso sculpture is a white marble piece based on the form of a twisting human being. Johnny Örbäck, former CEO of the Turning Torso contractor and Board Chairman of the Malmö branch of the co-operative housing association HSB, saw the sculpture in 1999 and contacted Calatrava to ask him to design a building using the same concept. Construction started in the summer of 2001.

One reason for the building of Turning Torso was to re-establish a recognizable skyline for Malmö since the removal of the Kockums Crane in 2002, which was located less than a kilometre from Turning Torso. The local politicians deemed it important for the inhabitants to have a symbol for Malmö — Kockumskranen, which was a large crane that had been used for shipbuilding and somewhat symbolised the city's blue collar roots.

As Turning Torso is a private residential building there is no access for the general public.

The Universum Bremen opened in September 2000 near to the University of Bremen, Germany. Covering over 4,000 m² the exhibition contains exhibits related to one of the three topics: mankind, earth and the cosmos. The science center building, with its 40,000 stainless steel scales, resembles a mixture between a whale and mussel. It was designed by the Bremen architect Thomas Klumpp.

The company Universum Managementges. mbH runs the science center as a private enterprise. About 3.4 million people visited the Universum in the first seven years since it opened.

In 2007 the Universum opened a large outdoor area, the EntdeckerPark, and a new building, the SchauBox. In contrast to the curved metallic older building, the SchauBox, developed by Haslob Kruse and Partner, is cubic with a rust-red exterior. It is used for additional exhibitions, which change annually.

The EntdeckerPark, the 5,000 m² outdoor area developed by Planungsguppe Grün, offers a number of hands-on exhibits, landscape elements and a 27m-high tower, called the Turm der Lüfte.

Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London, England, over the River Thames. It is close to the Tower of London, which gives it its name.Name[›] It has become an iconic symbol of London.

The Hagia Sophia or Aya Sofia is a former mosque, and former church in the old European part of Istanbul. It was the leading church for the Eastern Orthodox church for over 900 years, until the sack of Constantinople in 1453, after which it was converted into a mosque. It remained a mosque for almost 500 years, as in 1935 it was converted into a museum by orders from the first president of Turkey: Atatürk. The builing has suffered a great bit of damage during the centuries (especially the dome), because of earthquakes and fires, but has always been rebuild soon after. A large numbers of the christian mosaics became visible in the 1930's, during restaurations.

It seems that the local leadership would transform Dubai in a sort of midpoint between Hong Kong and Montecarlo. High degree of freedom, especially compared to other neighboring countries (even of United Emirates), make easy and comfortable for western and Asiatic people trading and living in Dubai. Low tax rate is important key to attract capitals and trade business. Being located on the Gulf area, it becomes a favorite access door for the Middle East area, Iraq included. All of that make Dubai a melting pot of races and cultures. There are, too, nearby an high number of well-to-do people, a number of immigrates that lead a poor life with few rights: echoes of this problem can be found also on the local newspapers. Fast growing is the impression that the high number of tower being building give to the visitor. The photos of this page were taken quite a year ago during a business travel of few days. There weren't time to spare: most of the photos were taken from inside a taxi! Visit in this way Dubai, I got the feeling of untrue, the impression of a sort of a "plastic" city: the high glasses tower, the plane spaces and the few contact with city true life might yielded this sense. Sure, it was not set up in short time; it took some centuries from the first works to the completion of the three famous buildings that make so unique this place: the cathedral, the baptistery and the leaning tower. Sited in Pisa, at the heart of one of the Italian marvelous region, Tuscany, "Piazza dei Miracoli" witness quite one thousand of Italian history and culture; it became in the last fifty years also a target for mass tourism. Of the three buildings, the more famous is the Leaning Tower whose construction began nearly the end of XII century. Circular basement was quite uncommon among all the towers built in Italy. Based on some opinions, it seems that the original project made provision for a higher tower than the one that was built. Certainly the circular basement allowed the tower to stand up in spite of the high level of leaning. Unfortunately, when I took the photos the weather was not so good: very hot and sultry. Then it was very difficult to give evidence of the colour contrast between the blue sky, the green meadow and the dominant white of the buildings.

We left at 9:00 and met Kirk Duclaux at 10:30 in front of the Florence Duomo (Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore). From these pictures you can see the layout: the San Giovanni Baptistry, the enormous Cathedralwith Brunelleschi's famous dome (containing the Vasari and Zuccari frescoes of The Last Judgement), Giotto's impressive bell tower. At the time of its completition the Cathedral was the largest in Europe, still second only to St. Peter's in Rome.
